The Pyramid - Escape Room LA (Downtown Los Angeles, CA) 1-19-2019

The Mask of the Jade Warrior!

Welcome back to my escape room blog!

The next escape room my group and I did was:

This is one of LA's most popular locations. The Escape Room LA currently has four options:

The group consisted of six people (Alex, Bryan, Kenny, Joanne, Jeric and Candace) + two additional strangers (which names I have forgotten already).

We decided to try our luck in The Pyramid!

The Pyramid
Set out on an expedition to a hidden jungle pyramid in search of The Mask of the Jade Warrior, a fabled lost treasure of the Maya. The mask is hidden in a secret tomb deep within the ancient pyramid. But to find it, you must solve the pyramid’s perplexing puzzles, riddles and challenges. Will you find the jade mask and escape? Or will you be trapped inside forever?

The Escape Rate was 40% at the time of us doing the room

Review
This section is for those escape room enthusiasts and Downtown Los Angeles city locals who wish to learn about the room. I urge all readers to please read the entire blog first before reading this section. You have been advised.

The Good
Overall, this has been by far one of the best locations that we have ever been to! This location was such a great find for us that I have decided to break down every single aspect of this place.

Entrance
When you first walk into this location, it feels like a lobby for some kind of fun amusement game park/arcade/office/so many things. The location establishes credibility by listing some stars that have done escape rooms (Emma Stone, Conan O'Brien, etc.). In addition, there are waivers on tablets that you must sign and are greeted by a friendly guest.

Storyline
We are greeted by an explorer (game host) who takes us to the entrance of the room. Before entering, you are able to see how many games have been played and how many successful escapes have been completed. Our game host gave us a complete narrative and story on the room. It was great!

Room
The room itself was honestly one of the most beautiful and stunning set designs we have ever seen. Without spoiling this room for future escape room enthusiasts, I will go into some key details.

There puzzles are unique to each and every section in this room. It does stay true to the Mayan culture and they did a great job with the lighting and the overall room atmosphere. As we moved forward to the following sections, the overall set design was so impressive.

Another aspect that we thought was very well done was the mixture of linear and nonlinear events. This is not your typical find a clue, find a number sequence and open a lock. The room delivers in providing tasks that are uniquely correlated with each section.

Something else that was quite fascinating was the usage of multi-modal surfaces and intricate tasks. The tasks themselves ranged in difficulty but we were able to crack them. They also use voiceovers and dim lighting which was very effective for the room.

I am happy to report that our group was successful in escaping the room with 1:29 seconds remaining!

The Room For Improvement
This was very difficult to critique or to fault this room because it was so superb! So this section may not be filled with many suggestions due to it's excellence.

If I had to give this room any kind of criticism it would definitely be in the area of precision. In one of the locations, we had to place items in certain marks. However, our game host had to tell us to wiggle them in order to make it fit. We found that to be unnecessary but it was fine I suppose.

Other than that, there really isn't much we would recommend for improvement. This room by far blew us way!

Overall Rating
The theme of The Pyramid was superb and really took us into the Mayan ruins and pyramids! We all felt very inspired and appreciated our game host taking us through each area and explaining the process of the room.

While we did have that one hiccup in one of the rooms, it did not affect our overall impression of this fantastic escape room. Overall, we found this room to be magnificent, entertaining, captivating and just spectacular.

My overall rating of this room would be 5/5.

What made this room get this type of rating was the fact that we all felt very connected with solving this room. Additionally, we spent several time discussing it after our experience was over. This location should be very proud of the phenomenal execution of this room, the puzzles, the story line, the design, the ambiance and overall experience.

Final Thoughts
I would give this room my highest recommendation without any reservations. This room can accommodate up to 8 players. I would definitely recommend having no less than 4 players for this game.
