The Ultimate Escape Rooms (Ventura, CA) 1-2-2018

Tea Cups, Clocks, Tables and Shrooms (Oh My!)

The first location of the new year that I got to experience my first escape room of 2019 is:

I actually found this location on accident during a much-needed trip to Morro Bay and Solvang Ca. We entered the Solvang location and thought about doing one of there rooms while in Solvang. However, once we saw that they had another location closer to Los Angeles, we decided to try that one instead.

The Ultimate Escape Rooms at Ventura, Ca has four rooms that are options to choose.

The group that I was with (Bryan and Roxana) decided on a room together. We read each of the descriptions and decided to try our luck in their We are all mad here room.

We are all mad here
This escape room is their second hardest room, according to their scoreboard at the location. It has about a 35% escape rate (at the time that we went). Which basically means about 3.5 times out of 10, the room is successfully completed and or escaped.
Description:
Talking animals, shrinking rooms, magic mushrooms! What's real, what's fantasy? Are you up for a hair-raising adventure? Be forewarned! Accept the challenge and you might risk going mad. But maybe, just maybe, you will be one of the lucky few who escape.

 Review:
This section is for those escape room enthusiasts and Ventura city locals who wish to learn about the room. I urge all readers to please read the entire blog first before reading this section. You have been advised.

The Good
Overall, we had a very positive experience at the Ultimate Escape Rooms at their Ventura location. When we walked into the room, we were immediately greeted by the escape room staff and hosts. We literally walked in and were told that we could book the room of our choice, despite arriving a few minutes late. In addition, they offered us a military/educator's discount which brought the price down to $25 per person.

As stated above, we chose to do the We Are All Mad Here escape room. This room pays homage to the Disney classic Alice in Wonderland. We enjoyed the decor of the room and the puzzles were pretty challenging as well. For the first 12-15 minutes, we found some of the items necessary to begin but felt pretty confused and lost. As we progressed through the room, we did request clues and hints along the way.

Overall, we did manage to escape the room with a little over one minute to spare. In addition, we did request for 3 hints throughout the process. Despite this room being a challenge, we had a very fun experience in the room. The room itself was pretty well done and we would definitely recommend this room for more experienced players or a big group.

The Room for Improvement
I think it's important to always leave some feedback to the locations in order to make their rooms be the best they can be. First, the size of the room was a concern. Even though we were only three people, it felt like we could only have one other person in the room with us. They market it to fit 8 people and that would not be ideal.

Another area of concern was the use of lock and key combinations. They did have some puzzles that required more elaborate and critical thinking, which we appreciated. They have a very non-linear theme for the room and they tried to make the puzzles and locks be linear. It would have been more effective to utilize more non-linear clues and hints.

Lastly, the delivery of the hints/clues. While we appreciated the staff being in character for clues and hints, we felt a bit lost at times. For example, they would give you a hint in the form of a riddle. In a way, getting help actually gets you another mind puzzle to solve in the hopes of utilizing it for the room.

Overall Rating
As stated before, we found this location to be a hidden gem in Ventura, CA. The theme of the room was very well done and truly brought you into Wonderland. Despite the size of the room, heavy use of key/lock combinations and the delivery of the hints, we found this room to be quite enjoyable.
Image result for 3.5/5 stars

My overall rating of this room would be: 3.5/5. What made this room very enjoyable for our group was the fact that we all felt inspired by the room. However, we did feel like there are some areas where the room could be improved on and would easily make this room jump up to a 4 or 4.5.

Final Thoughts
I would definitely recommend this room and the location for newbies and escape room enthusiasts alike! We definitely would come back to try the Wizard's Lair Room as it is their most difficult room.

Thank you The Ultimate Escape Rooms in Ventura, CA.
